Walking in Denver.

Its been a busy trip, LA, Nepal, Alamagordo, Chicago, Asilomar and now Denver. I actually have the next 3 days free and today I took it easy and walked out with the camera... not my fancy one but the shots came out quite well I think.

Take a walk with me to the Denver Art Museum and share two amazing textile stories.

In Denver people were asked to donate a blanket with a small story attached to it. The Artist Marie Watt's work is centered around community, particularly through her use of wool blankets. As with many of her projects, she looks for blankets that hold meanings and memories. The blankets donated are folded and stacked to create a blanket sculpture. As part of donating a blanket to this project, there is a tag attached to the blanket documenting the particular story.

Connecting fabrics to Places.

It proves that the use of the stitch ties us to the past and is part of our everyday life. I would love to be able to interpret that in fabric, but its a little beyond me right now. However, the fabric I bought in Nepal is being used in a very different way this week. I call it painting with cloth and its just perfect for my quilt, 'Finding Frida' It has nothing to do with Nepal, its Mexican inspired...... or then again does it?

Most of the things I add to my blog are for women. Textile artists mostly. Well, I think this blog will be of interest to the man in your life. The colors of these old cars just blew my mind.

The quilting Genres I love.

During my time home I need to complete 5 quilts and I'm well on the way to doing that at the moment. I find that working on a number of genres at one time works well for me. I don't get bored with one quilt... and at the end I finish 5 quilts at once... (well there is a possibility that I won't) It all depends on babies, family, babysitting, another visit to the skin specialist and the need to stop and sigh every now and then.

A Mixture of Measures.

Today has been a mixture of measures. Juggling the norm to create something new. As well as family pleasures I bought 3 new pairs of glasses, a blue pair, a black and white pair and a black and orange pair ! (those of you who know me, know my passion for unusual glasses)  Family pleasures was spending time with Grandie Jaya, aged 3 who is staying with us for a few days and Baby Jay who had his first visit to our house this evening. Then it was back to work. In completing my latest project in thread painting I’ve  needed to study the subject very carefully. It’s my own image, I know it very intimately, I have actually drawn every piece of fur before committing it to thread. I have a number of photo images to follow, and I try to capture the image in thread as close to the photo as possible. Fur is interesting to do. I actually lay down a light layer, next a medium thread color, a dark final layer …

Photography is my passion and I was keen to capture the light and ambience of this majestic place. However, I really wanted to see and photograph the 'wave' formation of rocks. The formation is situated on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness of the Colorado Plateau. The rest of this blog is a photographic explanation of our visit.

No what will I do with this?

The world speeds past you in a fusion of color as you travel and I try to capture as much as I can with photo images, however, the design images stay in the brain and don't escape until I put pen to paper. This past year the world of illustration changed for me when I was introduced to the iPad Pro. Now I have paints, inks, pencils with me all in one package and the soothing music in the ipad of Nora Jones added to my relaxation as I worked yesterday.

We've had 5 days in Santa Fe and its been the most wonderful experience. There is so much to like about this city. Everyone we've met has been very helpful and a pleasure to visit with. We've made a lot of new friends. I love the climate at this time of the year but the locals tell me it's a little hot for this time of the year. I'm a very visual person. Everywhere I turn there is beauty and things that I've never seen before. To say that Santa Fe is unique is an understatement.

I try to capture the soul of the scene. I don't take wide panoramic images, I like to stand back and just capture the scene as it happens

We had a superb day, but by then end the heat takes a toll on the body, these ladies lifted from the lives of suburbia were thrust onto the interesting and at times pure darn scary roads of Delhi. Yes, we also drove down the wrong side of the road amidst 5 pm traffic to get to our turn off quickly. We dodged thousands of motor bikes. We saw a family of 6 on one bike, and the variety of helmets makes your head spin. You can just turn in front of anyone or cut off the car to the side of you as long as you use your horn. I love it and I'm in absolute awe of the drivers their driving skill is amazing.

Lost in Delhi – or something like that.

I actually visited there before and I enjoyed the experience. You travel through the narrow lanes on rickshaws, vehicles are unable to go down the narrow lanes. The poor rickshaw driver strains under the heavy load as he negotiates his way through the throng. Overhead the electricity wires have thousands of wires entwined and hanging from very precarious positions like electronic lace. I'm almost afraid to look up, the imagination goes wild.
